Community Alliance with Family Farmers
Overview
Community Alliance with Family Farmers, known as CAFF, supports resilient family farms, communities, and ecosystems through practical services and policy advocacy. Its programs address ecological farming, farm business needs, food safety, market access, and appropriate technology. Small farms and local food systems are central to its work. California growers can explore farm resources and the Small Farm Tech Hub, while community and policy partners can connect with farmer perspectives and networks.
What they do
Ecological and organic farming
Provides on-farm technical assistance, field days, and research on ecological pest management, hedgerows, cover crops, compost, and soil health, and helps farmers transition to or maintain organic certification.
Market access and food safety
Helps family farms sell to schools, hospitals, universities, and other buyers, and helps small and underserved farms meet food safety rules through workshops and on-farm assistance in English, Spanish, and Hmong.
Appropriate technology for small farms
Supports small farms, farmers markets, and food hubs in adopting e-commerce, point-of-sale, and digital marketing tools, and co-hosts a competition for practical hardware, software, and DIY solutions for small farms.
Farmer-centered policy advocacy
Advocates for policies that support small family farms, local food systems, and resilient communities, bringing farmer perspectives to policy partners through regional chapters across California.
